SCK CEN best Master thesis awards |
| |
The SCK CEN Academy grants an annual award (worth 1000 EUR) to the authors of the 2 best master theses performed in its laboratories. The laureates of 2019-2020 are:
Heddy Barale for his thesis "Application of the SERPENT2 code to neutronic analyses of the MYRRHA core: a sensitivity approach" and Yohannes Molla for his work on "OpenMC modelling of the critical MYRRHA configuration: an emphasis on cross-section homogenization". Congratulations!
The laureates presented their work during the SCK CEN & BNS-YG scientific contest online award ceremony on November 26, 2020.

15 PhD diplomas in 2020 |

We are proud to close this year 2020 with a total of 15 PhD diplomas obtained in different nuclear research fields.
The SCK CEN PhD programme runs in collaboration with the Belgian universities. New topics to start in October 2021 will be opened for applications in January 2021. Deadline for submission of students' files is March 31, 2021.

COVID-19 could not prevent the SCK CEN Academy from organizing an overview event presenting all the PhD research ongoing in our laboratories. The SCK CEN PhD Day went digital! Highly-placed visit to SCK CEN in the spring of 2020: Emiel from Technopolis made a unique tour behind the scenes of SCK CEN. Our super enthusiastic scientists and engineers explain how a reactor works, what SCK CEN does in space, and why our research into new radioactive isotopes for medical applications is so important. The vlog was published in October by Technopolis.

ETRAP 2021 conference - update |
| |
The international conference on education and training in radiation protection (ETRAP) will happen on the planned dates of 23 to 26 March 2021. We will organize the conference online, and focus on the theme "training in a virtual setting" (appropriate, how could it be otherwise...).
This unique event will combine science, didactics, virtual tools and online entertainment. New deadline for abstracts: December 18, 2020.

Participation in new EC projects |
| |
We continue our activities at European level. On top of our active participation in education and training projects such as ENEN+ and ARIEL, and involvement in the knowledge transfer actions of scientific projects such as EURAD, the SCK CEN Academy started new engagements.
TOURR (Towards Optimized Use of Research Reactors in Europe) an ORIENT-NM kicked-off in the autumn. The ambition of the TOURR project is to secure the access and availability of research reactors as a vital part of the European Research Area and for education and training purposes. ORIENT-NM aims to establish a European research community on nuclear materials, and will also give attention to education, training and knowledge management.

On the initiative of SCK CEN, the Research Foundation-Flanders (FWO) and the Fonds de la Recherche Scientifique-FNRS (F.R.S.-FNRS) grant every two years the Chair “Roger Van Geen”, worth
12 500 EUR.
2019 laureate Prof. Dr Eric Salmon will present his inaugural lecture on January 20, 2021. Subsequent follow-up lectures are foreseen in January and February 2021.
A new call for nominees will be launched in January 2021. More information will be available at the FWO and FNRS websites.
